Space Cadet was an unreleased party game developed by Mattel Electronics for the Intellivision home gaming console, offering one of the most offbeat and imaginative space battle concepts of its time.
Originally showcased at the 1984 CES as part of the "Party Line" cartridge series, this quirky game was designed for fun multiplayer experiences but sadly never made it to production.
In Space Cadet, two teams—one from the ice planet and one from the fire planet—pilot small, zippy flying saucers. However, these saucers work best as battering rams in an "outer space demolition derby." The goal is simple yet thrilling: bump into asteroids and send them hurtling toward your opponent's planet. The team that hits their enemy’s planet with the most asteroids wins the chaotic battle. If no player activity is detected, the game will automatically let the computer take over.
This unreleased game was one of Mattel’s bold experiments aimed at casual gaming and party settings. It introduced a lighthearted, competitive mechanic that could easily entertain players for hours at social gatherings. With its whimsical outer space theme, combined with the wacky demolition derby gameplay, Space Cadet remains a lost gem that could have added a whole new dimension to the Intellivision catalog.
Though never officially released, Space Cadet continues to capture the imagination of retro gaming enthusiasts as one of the rare pieces of gaming history from the era of Intellivision.
