Explore its history, rare editions, and why collectors still seek it today.
The VTech CreatiVision was a unique hybrid home gaming system and computer developed by VTech in the early 1980s. Known for its innovative design that combined a console with a built-in keyboard, the CreatiVision found its way into markets across the globe under several brand names. In Europe, it was widely distributed in West Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy. It also made appearances in Australia and New Zealand under alternative names like The Dick Smith Wizzard, FunVision, and Hanimex Rameses, and was sold in Israel as the Educat 2002.
Designed primarily for PAL television systems, the CreatiVision had a rare NTSC variant released in Japan by Cheryco, which is now a prized item among collectors. Despite plans for a U.S. release, the console failed to launch effectively in the American market. A proposed French version called the VZ 2000 was likely never released.
The CreatiVision stands out in retro gaming history for its distinctive branding strategy and wide geographical reach. It holds a special place in the vintage tech community and remains a sought-after collectible due to its rarity, especially non-European variants. Whether known as the CreatiVision, Dick Smith Wizzard, or another alias, this system continues to capture the interest of gaming historians and collectors alike.
