Q*bert

Qbert* is one of the most iconic retro video games of the 1980s, developed by Gottlieb and published on the ColecoVision home console by Parker Brothers.

This isometric puzzle-platformer quickly became a fan favorite thanks to its innovative gameplay and quirky main character.

The game places players in control of Qbert, a round orange creature with a tubular nose, viewed from a third-person perspective. Each level begins at the top of a pyramid of cubes. By jumping diagonally from cube to cube, Qbert changes the color of each block he lands on. The objective is to transform the entire pyramid into the target color while avoiding enemies and obstacles that threaten to knock him off course.

What made Qbert* stand out in the arcade era was its unique control scheme and fresh take on puzzle-action gameplay. The diagonal movement system challenged players to adapt quickly, while enemies like Coily the snake and bouncing balls added layers of difficulty. The mix of puzzle-solving, reflex-based platforming, and a memorable cartoonish mascot gave Qbert* lasting appeal.

When released on the ColecoVision by Parker Brothers, Qbert* brought the arcade experience into the living room. It showcased the console’s ability to deliver colorful graphics and smooth gameplay, making it one of the most popular titles in the ColecoVision library.

Today, Qbert* remains a hallmark of retro gaming history. Its simple yet addictive mechanics, distinct isometric style, and enduring legacy continue to influence puzzle and platform games. For collectors and enthusiasts of the ColecoVision, Qbert* is both a nostalgic favorite and a cornerstone of early home gaming.
