2010: The Graphic Action Game is a sci-fi puzzle and maze-based video game for the ColecoVision home console, developed by Nuvatec and Coleco Industries.
Inspired by the novel 2010: Odyssey Two, this game challenges players to avert disaster aboard the Discovery spacecraft as it approaches the unstable surface of Jupiter's volcanic moon, Io.
Players must navigate the ship’s critical systems—Engine, Power, Communications, Life Support, and the HAL 9000—by selecting and repairing circuits in real time. The gameplay centers on routing power through these systems, requiring careful planning and risk assessment. At least three circuits must be powered for the Discovery to function at a basic level, but four provide a more stable and forgiving environment for mission success.
The game introduces strategic complexity by integrating the HAL 9000, which can assist in powering circuits but operates at a slower pace. Communications systems enable HAL to relay the status of his assigned tasks, while Life Support systems provide limited protection from electromagnetic pulses (EMPs), which can damage active circuits and force players to repair and re-engage them.
Players must also balance engine use—activating orbital boosts with precision—since overuse can lead to system degradation. With its unique blend of logic, resource management, and science fiction storytelling, 2010: The Graphic Action Game offers a distinct challenge that stands out among ColecoVision’s game library. It remains a memorable entry for fans of both retro gaming and classic sci-fi.
