Yosaku

Yosaku is a logging-themed action game developed by Epoch for the Cassette Vision home gaming console.

An unofficial clone of SNK’s early arcade title—also named Yosaku—this version holds unique historical value, as the original arcade game is no longer preserved. As a result, the Cassette Vision adaptation is now the most accessible version of the game known to exist.

In Yosaku, players take control of the titular character, a lumberjack tasked with chopping down trees in a forest setting. The gameplay involves timing axe swings while simultaneously dodging a variety of forest animals that run across the screen. Players must use precise jumps and ducks to avoid these obstacles and continue their task uninterrupted.

Unlike Midway’s later Timber, Yosaku offers a more primitive but compelling take on the lumberjack genre. The game’s challenge comes from its combination of multitasking and reflex-based mechanics, particularly notable given the limitations of the Cassette Vision hardware.

Despite its rudimentary graphics and controls, Yosaku remains infamous among retro gaming enthusiasts due to its connection to a lost arcade original and its unusual accessibility. It stands as a curious example of early Japanese game development and how early consoles like the Cassette Vision attempted to replicate—and preserve—arcade experiences for the home market.
