Super Donkey Kong Junior

Super Donkey Kong Junior for the ColecoVision is an unreleased and enhanced version of Nintendo’s 1983 Donkey Kong Jr. port, designed to take full advantage of the console’s capabilities.

Building on the original arcade game released in 1982, this prototype aimed to deliver a more complete and arcade-accurate experience before it was ultimately shelved.

In Donkey Kong Jr., players take control of Donkey Kong’s son as he sets out to rescue his captured father from Mario, who plays the unlikely role of villain. The gameplay spans four distinct stages—Vines, Springboard, Chains, and Mario’s Hideout—each requiring players to climb, jump, and dodge enemies while collecting keys to free Donkey Kong from his cage.

The unreleased Super DK! Junior version expanded upon the official ColecoVision release by utilizing the cartridge’s full memory capacity. This enhancement allowed for the inclusion of additional screens, more detailed visuals, and improved sound effects, providing a richer and more authentic adaptation of the arcade original.

Although Super Donkey Kong Junior never reached commercial release, it remains a fascinating part of ColecoVision history and a glimpse into what could have been one of the most advanced platformers on the system. The prototype highlights Nintendo’s early efforts to push home console hardware and preserve the arcade experience for players at home.
