Pooyan

Pooyan for the Atari 5200 is a modern homebrew release developed by Paul Lay and Aking, bringing the classic arcade gameplay to a system that never received an official commercial version during its original lifespan.

This release is based on the 1983 Atari 8-bit computer port of Pooyan, faithfully adapted for the Atari 5200 hardware decades after the console was discontinued.

Originally released as an arcade game by Konami, Pooyan gained popularity for its fast-paced action and simple yet challenging mechanics. Despite the Atari 5200 sharing architectural similarities with Atari’s 8-bit computers, Pooyan was never published for the console in the early 1980s. This homebrew edition fills that gap, offering collectors and enthusiasts the opportunity to experience what an official Atari 5200 version might have looked like.

In the game, players take on the role of Mother Pig, also known as Mama, as she battles waves of wolves in an effort to rescue her kidnapped Piggies. Armed with arrows and slabs of meat, Mama must fend off enemies descending on balloons while avoiding hazards and strategically timing her attacks. The objective is to defeat the wolves and safely return the Piggies home, progressing through increasingly difficult stages.

The Atari 5200 homebrew version preserves the core gameplay and visual style of the Atari 8-bit computer release, while adapting controls and performance to suit the 5200’s unique controller and hardware design. As a non-commercial release, Pooyan on the Atari 5200 is primarily sought after by retro gaming enthusiasts, homebrew collectors, and fans of unreleased or unofficial console conversions.

Today, Pooyan for Atari 5200 stands as an example of the continued interest in expanding classic console libraries through homebrew development, offering a historically interesting and playable addition to the system’s catalog.
