Reworking Ms. Pac-Man to deliver a more authentic arcade-accurate Pac-Man experience.
Pac-Man Arcade is a homebrew ROM hack developed by Rob Kudla and released through the AtariAge community for the Atari 5200 home gaming console.
Designed for collectors and enthusiasts seeking a more faithful home version of the arcade classic, this project addresses long-standing criticisms of Atari’s official Pac-Man adaptations by rebuilding the experience on the stronger foundation of Ms. Pac-Man.
Rather than modifying the notoriously compromised Atari 2600 release, Kudla chose to rework Ms. Pac-Man, which already featured superior gameplay mechanics and smoother performance. The result is a version of Pac-Man that more closely reflects the look, sound, and structure of the original arcade game, aligning with what many players expected from Atari during the early 1980s.
Significant changes were made to distinguish Pac-Man Arcade from its source material. The graphics were redesigned to match the original Pac-Man characters and maze presentation, while the theme music and sound effects were altered to improve authenticity. The audio code was further refined, adding the iconic siren that defines the tension of arcade gameplay.
Gameplay structure was also carefully adjusted. The additional tunnel and extra mazes introduced in Ms. Pac-Man were removed, restoring the simpler maze progression associated with Pac-Man. Fruit behavior was corrected so that bonus items appear stationary in the center of the screen, rather than moving across the playfield. The playfield color and layout were also revised to better reflect the arcade standard.
Pac-Man Arcade stands as a notable example of the Atari homebrew scene’s dedication to historical accuracy and technical refinement. For Atari 5200 collectors and retro gaming historians, this ROM hack represents an effort to deliver the Pac-Man experience Atari fans originally wanted, while showcasing the creative potential of community-driven development decades after the console’s release.
