Released in 2014–2015. Learn about its gameplay, history, developer, and cartridge release.
Oils Well for the Atari 5200 is a modern homebrew release that brings a previously unavailable classic to Atari’s early 1980s console.
Originally developed by Thomas J. Mitchell and released in 1983 for the Atari 8-bit computer family, Oils Well was notably absent from the official Atari 5200 library during the system’s commercial lifespan. This gap was later addressed by the homebrew community, with the Atari 5200 conversion completed by developer known as “playsoft.”
The game was first made available digitally as a homebrew release on February 14, 2014, followed by a physical cartridge release on June 19, 2015. The cartridge edition was published by AtariAge, a well-known name in the retro gaming and homebrew scene, particularly for preserving and expanding the Atari ecosystem long after its commercial peak.
Oils Well is a maze-based arcade game with clear design similarities to the arcade title Anteater. Players control a continuously moving oil drill bit that tunnels through underground terrain. The objective is to collect all oil dots within each level while navigating tight corridors and avoiding a variety of subterranean enemies. The drill’s movement requires careful planning, as it cannot stop once set in motion, adding a strategic layer to what initially appears to be a simple arcade concept.
The Atari 5200 version faithfully adapts the original computer game’s mechanics while making effective use of the console’s hardware. Controls, enemy behavior, and level layouts closely mirror the 8-bit computer release, offering an authentic experience tailored for Atari 5200 enthusiasts. As a result, Oils Well has become a respected example of high-quality homebrew development and a desirable cartridge among collectors.
Today, Oils Well stands as both a historical curiosity and a testament to the dedication of the retro gaming community. It represents what could have been part of the official Atari 5200 lineup and remains an important addition for players and collectors interested in homebrew games, unreleased conversions, and classic maze arcade gameplay.
