Muppet Go-Round

Muppet Go-Round is a prototype title developed internally by Atari, Inc. in 1983 for the Atari 5200 home gaming console.

Intended as part of a dedicated children’s software lineup, the game was never officially released, making it one of the more obscure and sought-after prototype titles associated with the system.

The game is an educational children’s title and a direct port of Letter-Go-Round from the Atari 8-bit computer family. Designed to be accessible to younger players, Muppet Go-Round focuses on simple interaction and learning-oriented gameplay, incorporating familiar Muppet characters to create a friendly and engaging experience.

Muppet Go-Round was planned to be used with the Atari 5200 Kid’s Controller, a large, simplified keypad designed specifically for children with smaller hands. Alongside Astro Grover and Big Bird’s Hide and Seek, it formed part of Atari’s unreleased children’s line for the 5200. While Atari successfully released a separate children’s series for the Atari 2600, the 5200 Kid’s Controller and its associated games were ultimately canceled before reaching the market.

Although the Atari 5200 versions were never made commercially available, the games themselves did not disappear entirely. Muppet Go-Round and related titles were later released by CBS for the Atari 8-bit computer systems, in some cases with minor revisions. Today, the Atari 5200 prototype of Muppet Go-Round stands as an important piece of Atari history, illustrating the company’s broader ambitions for educational gaming and its unrealized plans for expanding the 5200’s audience beyond traditional arcade-style titles.
