A classic platform adventure by K-Byte and CBS Electronics featuring exploration, time limits, and strategic treasure hunting.
Mountain King is a classic platform adventure game developed by K-Byte and released by CBS Electronics for the Atari 5200 home gaming console.
The game is set deep within a multi-level diamond mine, where players must navigate a complex series of platforms and tunnels to recover a valuable crown and escape before time expires.
The primary objective in Mountain King is to locate and retrieve the crown hidden within the mine, but doing so requires completing several prerequisite tasks. Players must first collect enough diamonds to reach a score of 1,000 points. Diamonds are scattered throughout the mine and can also be found inside treasure chests, encouraging thorough exploration of the environment.
Visibility plays a key role in gameplay, as the mine is largely dark. The player is equipped with a flashlight, which is used to illuminate the surroundings and reveal important objects such as diamonds, treasure chests, and the flame spirit. After accumulating sufficient points, the next step is to locate this hidden flame spirit somewhere within the mine.
Once the flame spirit has been found, the player must locate the entrance to the temple that houses the crown. The entrance is guarded by a skull spirit, and access is only granted by offering the flame spirit. Upon entering the temple and claiming the crown, the goal shifts to escaping the mine by reaching the top before the level’s time limit expires.
The escape sequence introduces additional danger, as cave bats fly throughout the mine and can steal the crown if they come into contact with the player. If the crown is lost, the entire process must be repeated. Further risk awaits at the bottom of the mine, where a deadly spider lurks. Entering this area carelessly can result in the player becoming trapped in the spider’s web and being eaten.
Each level in Mountain King is governed by a time limit, which becomes progressively shorter as the player advances. This increasing pressure adds difficulty and reinforces the need for efficient exploration and precise movement. With its layered objectives, atmospheric design, and escalating challenge, Mountain King stands as a distinctive and memorable title in the Atari 5200 library and a respected classic among retro game collectors.
