Moon Patrol

Moon Patrol is a classic arcade-style action game released by Atari for the Atari 5200 home gaming console. The game places the player in the role of a Luna City police officer assigned to patrol Sector Nine, an area described as the home of the toughest thugs in the galaxy.

The objective is to navigate hazardous lunar terrain while defending against enemy attacks and completing each course as efficiently as possible.

The upper portion of the screen provides critical gameplay information through a timeline-style map that represents the current course. This map allows players to anticipate upcoming hazards and plan their actions accordingly. Alongside the map are three indicator lights that signal specific threats. The top indicator warns of incoming aerial enemy attacks, the middle light alerts the player to approaching minefields, and the bottom light signals enemies that are closing in from behind.

Moon Patrol incorporates a checkpoint-based scoring system that adds a strategic, time-based element to the gameplay. Each course is divided into five checkpoints labeled E, J, O, T, and Z. The time taken to travel between checkpoints is measured and compared to an average time, with faster performance resulting in higher bonus point awards. This mechanic encourages skilled driving and precise control rather than simply surviving enemy encounters.

The game features two distinct courses: the regular course and the more challenging champion course. Upon completing the regular course, the player’s lunar buggy changes color from pink to red, visually indicating progression before continuing into the next phase of the game. This transition reinforces the increasing difficulty and provides a clear sense of advancement.

Moon Patrol on the Atari 5200 successfully blends action, timing, and progression-based gameplay. Its combination of visual indicators, checkpoint scoring, and escalating challenge has secured its reputation as a standout title in Atari’s home console lineup and a valued game for retro collectors and classic arcade enthusiasts.
