Microgammon SB – Unreleased Backgammon Game for Atari 5200

Microgammon SB is an unreleased prototype game developed by Steve Baker for the Atari 5200 home gaming console.

The title is a port of Microgammon, a backgammon game originally released on the Apple II platform. The decision to bring the game to the Atari 5200 was influenced by the console’s support for a similar high-resolution graphics mode.

Due to hardware limitations of the selected graphics mode, the Atari 5200 version of Microgammon SB displays visuals exclusively in black and white. While this restriction limited the use of color, it proved well suited to the presentation of a traditional backgammon board, maintaining clarity and readability for gameplay.

As a digital adaptation of backgammon, Microgammon SB focuses on recreating the classic board game experience rather than arcade-style action. The clean monochrome visuals align with the structured nature of backgammon, emphasizing piece placement and strategic movement.

Although never officially released, Microgammon SB represents an example of early prototype development for the Atari 5200. It highlights how developers explored the system’s high-resolution capabilities and adapted existing software from other platforms to fit the console’s technical strengths and constraints.
