Tower of Doom

Tower of Doom, developed by Mattel Electronics, Realtime Associates, and INTV, is a captivating single-player dungeon crawler for the Intellivision home gaming console.

Inspired by the classic Dungeons & Dragons universe, this game challenges players to navigate through treacherous dungeons, battle fearsome creatures, and uncover magical treasures.

Players can choose from 10 distinct character classes, each with its own set of strengths and abilities. With 7 different quests available, ranging in difficulty, the more advanced quests feature randomized maps and unpredictable magic item effects, making each playthrough unique and thrilling.

Once a quest is selected, players control their chosen character using a top-down view of the dungeon. As they explore, corridors and rooms are revealed on the map, creating a sense of discovery. An on-screen inventory allows players to manage the items they’ve gathered, which may include weapons, potions, or magical objects. In addition to their inventory, players also have access to a map of the entire dungeon, helping them navigate the labyrinthine environment.

When players encounter creatures in the dungeon, they can choose to fight or attempt to bribe them using discovered items. These strategic options add depth to the gameplay, as do the various magical items and traps scattered throughout the dungeon. Each item or trap has its own effect, either aiding or hindering the player's progress, requiring thoughtful exploration and decision-making.

Though Tower of Doom was originally intended to be a voice-optional game, the economic hardships of Mattel Electronics in 1983-84 led to a challenging development process. Despite numerous layoffs and the eventual closure of Mattel Electronics, the dedication of the development team ensured Tower of Doom was completed, offering an engaging and immersive experience for Intellivision fans.

With its mix of deep RPG elements, randomized quests, and strategic dungeon exploration, Tower of Doom stands out as one of the most complex and rewarding games on the Intellivision console, appealing to fans of Dungeons & Dragons and retro gaming enthusiasts alike.
