Power Lords: Quest for Volcan

Power Lords: Quest for Volcan is an unreleased 1983 title developed by NAP Consumer Electronics for the ColecoVision.

Adapted from the Odyssey² game of the same name, it was based on the "Power Lords" toy and comic franchise and introduced an ambitious mix of space combat, platforming, and exploration that pushed the boundaries of early home console design.

Players take on the role of superhero Adam Power, piloting a space sled in orbit around the volatile planetoid known as Volcan Rock. The first challenge is to confront and destroy a colossal laser-eyed space serpent coiled around the mountain, serving as the guardians of the alien stronghold.

Once the serpent is defeated, Adam lands on Volcan Rock, where the gameplay shifts to ground combat. Here, players engage in firefights with the Extra-Terrestrial Alliance, including villains Gryptogg, Raygoth, and Arkus. After surviving these encounters, the adventure continues into underground caverns filled with hazards, enemy ambushes, and the villains’ “instruments of evil.” Successfully navigating the maze allows the player to escape, advance to the next stage, and repeat the cycle at a higher difficulty level.

Though never officially released for the ColecoVision, Power Lords: Quest for Volcan is remembered as one of the console’s most intriguing lost titles. Its combination of space shooter action, boss battles, and side-scrolling exploration made it stand out conceptually from other ColecoVision games of the early 1980s.

For retro gaming enthusiasts and collectors, Power Lords: Quest for Volcan remains a fascinating example of an ambitious project that could have expanded the ColecoVision library but ultimately never reached store shelves.
