Pitstop (ColecoVision, 1983) – Classic Epyx Racing Game with Pit Crew Strategy

Pitstop, released by Epyx in 1983 for the ColecoVision, is a unique action racing game that combines speed with strategic pit crew management.

Unlike many racing titles of its time, Pitstop challenges players not only on the track but also in the pits.

The game features six distinct race tracks, each offering its own layout and challenges. Players compete in the Grand Circuit, which requires racing across all six tracks with the goal of earning money based on placement and laps completed. Additional modes include single-race practice sessions and the Mini Circuit, a condensed competition spanning three races.

A defining mechanic of Pitstop is its emphasis on resource management. Tires gradually wear down during the race, increasing the risk of a blowout, while fuel consumption must also be monitored closely. When either becomes critical, players must enter the pits. Here, control shifts to managing the pit crew, replacing tires, and refueling the car as quickly as possible. Every moment spent in the pit counts, as the race continues while repairs are made, forcing players to balance precision with speed.

Difficulty settings and lap length options allow for a customized gameplay experience, making Pitstop accessible to both beginners and veteran players. By combining traditional racing thrills with strategic decision-making, Pitstop stood out among early 1980s racing games and remains a memorable entry in the ColecoVision library.
