Mr. Do’s Castle

Mr. Do’s Castle, released on the ColecoVision by Parker Brothers, is a unique entry in the retro arcade lineup that combines action and strategy within the trap-em-up genre.

Players step into the role of Mr. Do, navigating a castle of platforms and ladders while collecting cherries and avoiding unicorn-like monsters. Equipped with a hammer, Mr. Do knocks out blocks to reveal cherries, while the empty spaces left behind become tactical traps for enemies. Timing and precision are key, as players can drop blocks onto monsters to defeat them.

The gameplay escalates with tension as the clock runs down. If players take too long, monsters evolve into faster, more aggressive forms and can even multiply, making survival increasingly difficult. Levels advance once all cherries have been collected or all monsters are eliminated. Losing a life occurs when Mr. Do is caught by a monster, with the game ending once all lives are gone.

As in the original Mr. Do!, players can earn extra lives by spelling out the word “EXTRA.” Collecting keys scattered throughout the castle unlocks a magic shield, transforming enemies into letter-bearing versions that are easier to defeat. A rare diamond occasionally appears on the playfield, rewarding a bonus credit when collected, adding an extra layer of excitement.

Mr. Do’s Castle also features variations, such as Mr. Do Vs. Unicorns and early revisions where cherry blocks were absent, changing the ways players could complete stages. These versions relied on fill blocks, which shifted in color every two stages, offering a slightly different gameplay experience.

With its blend of puzzle-solving, quick reflexes, and strategic enemy traps, Mr. Do’s Castle stands as a classic example of the trap-em-up style, alongside titles like Heiankyo Alien, Lode Runner, and Space Panic. It remains a challenging and rewarding choice for fans of retro arcade games and ColecoVision collectors.
