Moonsweeper (ColecoVision, 1983) – Rescue Mission Arcade Action by Imagic

Moonsweeper, developed by Imagic for the ColecoVision home console, is a fast-paced space shooter set in the perilous Star Quadrant Jupiter.

The player’s mission is to rescue stranded miners while navigating hostile environments both in space and on the surfaces of alien moons.

Gameplay begins in open space, where the player must skillfully maneuver their ship to avoid deadly hazards such as aurora flares, photon torches, and incoming space bullets from the sun. As moons pass by, players can descend to the surface to continue their mission. On each moon, miners wait to be rescued, but the terrain is fraught with obstacles including alien surface destroyers, lunar satellites, and towering defenses.

The challenge intensifies as each moon presents different difficulty levels, requiring precise piloting and quick reflexes. Players must collect up to six miners—the ship’s maximum capacity—and then escape via accelerator rings. To aid survival, the ship is armed with photon torpedoes and shields, although the use of shields reduces the score.

Moonsweeper stands out as one of ColecoVision’s more dynamic arcade-style titles, blending space combat with rescue objectives and varied moon environments. Its combination of high-risk space navigation and surface-level action made it a memorable addition to Imagic’s lineup of classic games.
