Guide Bounty Bob through 11 mines, color every floor section, and outwit radioactive creatures before your oxygen runs out.
Miner 2049er, developed by Big Five Software and ported to the ColecoVision, is one of the most iconic platform games of the early 1980s.
Players take on the role of Bounty Bob, a determined miner tasked with exploring dangerous mines in pursuit of the villainous Yukon Yohan.
The objective in each stage is to cover every section of the mine floor by walking over it, which fills it with color. A level is complete only when every platform tile has been inspected. The ColecoVision port features eleven mines in total, adding an extra stage beyond the original ten. Each mine is timed, and Bob must finish before his oxygen supply runs out, heightening the tension of every move.
Mines are filled with radioactive creatures that threaten Bounty Bob’s progress. Fortunately, collecting items left behind by previous miners not only awards bonus points but also temporarily transforms the creatures into harmless, smiling green versions of themselves. In this state, Bob can safely collect them for additional points.
Each level introduces unique hazards and tools. Ladders allow vertical navigation, matter transporters instantly move Bob across the map, chutes force him to slide—sometimes into danger—and pulverizers pose lethal threats if not avoided. Many mines also feature custom elements that make every stage feel distinct and challenging.
With its clever mix of strategy, action, and puzzle-solving, Miner 2049er became a benchmark for platformers in the early 8-bit era. The ColecoVision version is especially prized for its expanded content and faithful adaptation of the original arcade-style gameplay. For retro gamers and collectors, it remains an essential piece of video game history.
