Developed by Mattel in 1984, the nearly finished game was cancelled after Mattel Electronics closed.
Masters of the Universe: The Power of He-Man was a ColecoVision project by Mattel Inc. that never reached release.
Following the success of its Intellivision counterpart, Mattel’s marketing team pushed for the game to appear on as many platforms as possible. Assigned a production number even higher than BurgerTime and Bump 'N' Jump, this ColecoVision title became the first project produced by Mattel for the system.
The programming was entrusted to Stephen Roney, one of Mattel’s most senior developers with a track record of working on pioneering titles. Roney had previously programmed Space Spartans, the first Intellivoice game, and Utopia for the Aquarius, notable as the only Mattel title written in C. His experience made him the ideal choice for this ambitious “first-time” ColecoVision project.
The game was completed to a nearly finished state and showcased at the January 1984 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Only minor refinements remained before it could be finalized for release. However, Mattel Electronics shut down just weeks later, bringing the project to an abrupt end.
For years, Masters of the Universe: The Power of He-Man on ColecoVision was thought lost, until it resurfaced at a Blue Sky Rangers event during the 1999 Game Developers’ Conference. This glimpse offered fans and historians a rare look at what could have been one of ColecoVision’s most iconic licensed titles, tied to one of the most popular toy and media franchises of the 1980s.
