Front Line (ColecoVision, 1984) – Taito’s Classic Vertical Scrolling Combat Game

Front Line, developed by Taito and released for the ColecoVision by Coleco Industries, is a vertically scrolling action game that challenges players to infiltrate enemy territory and destroy a heavily defended fortress.

Players navigate through a variety of hazardous environments, including jungles, deserts, rocky landscapes, and dense brush, each of which slows progress and increases the danger. Enemy soldiers and tanks patrol every stage, forcing players to rely on a combination of machine gun fire and grenades to survive.

In addition to on-foot combat, players can occasionally take control of an abandoned tank, greatly boosting their firepower and defenses. The ultimate objective is to reach the enemy fortress at the end of each level and destroy it, after which the game restarts at a higher difficulty.

Front Line supports one or two players and offers four selectable skill levels, making it a versatile and challenging title in the ColecoVision library. Its blend of run-and-gun action, vehicle combat, and escalating difficulty helped establish it as a standout home console adaptation of Taito’s arcade hit.
