Players step into the role of a biplane pilot, experiencing intense aerial combat from an immersive, inside-the-cockpit perspective. The game begins with the plane grounded, requiring players to gain speed for takeoff, signaled by a flashing light. Once airborne, the challenge is to shoot down as many enemy planes as possible while avoiding friendly fire.

Enemy planes are identifiable by their white tail sections, whereas friendly planes have yellow tails. However, when a plane is coming straight at the player, the distinction becomes blurred until it fires. Radar in the cockpit helps track incoming aircraft, but players must remain vigilant to distinguish between friends and foes. Scoring points depends on successful hits on enemy planes, while mistakenly downing friendly planes results in penalties.

Air Battle offers four levels of difficulty, each beginning at different point thresholds: 0, 200, 500, and 1000 points. Players can select their preferred difficulty by pressing the corresponding number key. Fuel and ammunition levels are critical, displayed on the left and right of the panel respectively. Players must monitor these levels closely, landing to refuel and reload when necessary. The game ends if the player is shot down, crashes during takeoff or landing, or runs out of fuel.
