Pleiades

Pleiades is a multi-stage shoot 'em up game developed by UA Limited and published by Emerson Radio Corp.

for the Emerson Arcadia 2001 home console. Released in the early 1980s, it serves as the direct sequel to the arcade hit Phoenix, bringing a more complex structure and layered gameplay to the home gaming experience.

The game is divided into three unique screens or stages, each offering distinct challenges. In the first stage, players must shoot down swooping alien attackers while avoiding their relentless fire. A strategic twist is introduced when an enemy generates a shield barrier just above the player's ship, requiring players to shoot through the shield to continue targeting enemies—while still vulnerable to incoming fire.

The second screen tasks players with avoiding or shooting phoenixes and their deadly projectiles while aiming for a mothership alien above. Points can be earned for eliminating phoenixes, but the main goal is to destroy the alien housed in the ship.

In the third stage, the gameplay shifts from shooting to precision navigation. Players must carefully maneuver between parked enemy ships to dock safely at the top of the screen. Completing this task increases the game’s difficulty and loops back to the first screen with harder enemy behavior and faster gameplay.

Pleiades also includes selectable modes that allow players to focus on a specific stage of the game, making it accessible for both casual players and those seeking a serious challenge. With its structured progression, responsive controls, and legacy as a Phoenix sequel, Pleiades is a standout title in the Arcadia 2001 library and a must-play for retro gaming enthusiasts.
