Jungler is a maze-based action game developed by UA Limited and published by Emerson Radio Corp.
for the Emerson Arcadia 2001 in 1982. Adapted from the original arcade title, Jungler introduces players to a strategic combat environment where size, speed, and positioning are key to survival.
In Jungler, players control a snake-like creature navigating a maze filled with rival serpentine enemies. The objective is to eliminate enemy creatures by either outmaneuvering or shrinking them, all while avoiding being destroyed. Enemies appear in three colors, each indicating different threat levels:
Red: Longer than the player; dangerous in head-on collisions.
Yellow: Equal in length; neutral and non-aggressive.
Green: Shorter and vulnerable; can be destroyed by colliding with their head.
Combat involves a combination of shooting and maneuvering. When hit by the player's fire, enemy creatures lose segments from their tails, making them faster and more difficult to catch. The player can increase their own size by collecting fruit that appears randomly in the maze, but risks shrinking when hit by enemy fire.
The dynamic between length and speed, combined with tactical navigation through tight corridors, makes Jungler both a reflex-based and strategic experience. Each game session challenges players to adapt to shifting enemy behaviors and to control their size advantageously.
Jungler stands out as one of the more complex maze games of the early 1980s, offering a blend of combat and puzzle-like mechanics within a confined playfield. Itβs a significant title for collectors and fans of arcade-era strategy games, demonstrating the evolution of maze-based gameplay beyond the simplicity of early titles like Pac-Man and Snake.
