Funky Fish is an underwater-themed action arcade game developed by UA Limited and Emerson Radio, released for the Emerson Arcadia 2001 home gaming console.
The title showcases one of the more imaginative and original concepts in the Arcadia 2001's game library, combining shooting mechanics with survival and transformation gameplay elements.
In Funky Fish, players take control of the titular character—a brightly colored aquatic creature—on a mission to defeat enemies and survive the deep-sea environment. The core objective is to attack hostile sea creatures guarding a monster, using bubbles as projectiles. When hit, the sea creatures temporarily transform into fruit, which the player must eat to maintain energy.
Timing is critical. If the player fails to eat the fruit in time, it reverts to its original enemy form and resumes the chase. Contact with any sea creature—or the central monster—results in the loss of a life. When this happens, the Funky Fish turns into bones and sinks to the ocean floor. The game ends when all lives are lost.
Funky Fish blends traditional arcade reflex-based gameplay with light strategy, encouraging players to act quickly, manage threats, and maintain energy levels. It stands out for its quirky theme and original mechanics, especially among early 1980s home console games.
For collectors and fans of vintage systems, Funky Fish remains a memorable and rare title in the Emerson Arcadia 2001’s catalog. Its creative concept and colorful gameplay make it an interesting piece of video game history from the early days of home entertainment.
