Dr. Slump is a Japan-exclusive action game developed and published by Bandai in 1983 for a variant of the Emerson Arcadia 2001, specifically the Bandai Arcadia, which was only available in the Japanese market.
The game is based on the popular Japanese manga Dr. Slump, created by Akira Toriyama, and features the series' protagonist Arale Norimaki in a unique and humorous sci-fi scenario.
In the game, players control Arale-chan as she attempts to stop the alien King Nikochan and his servant from assembling a UFO using stolen car parts. The core gameplay involves knocking the aliens down with Arale's iconic shout—referred to as the "N’cha Cannon"—to recover the car parts. If the aliens manage to deliver five parts to the UFO launching pad at the top of the screen, they complete the ship and attempt to escape. Successfully hitting the ship mid-launch rewards the player with bonus points.
A key gameplay mechanic involves managing Robovita-A fuel, which powers Arale. The fuel depletes over time, and players must periodically recharge by reaching a teapot that appears on screen.
The game includes two speed settings:
Level 1: Standard speed, suitable for beginners.
Level 2: Faster-paced gameplay, offering a higher challenge.
Players start with three lives, and each successful alien escape results in the loss of one life. The goal is to achieve the highest score possible by recovering parts, defeating enemies, and preventing the UFO from escaping.
Dr. Slump for the Bandai Arcadia stands as one of the earliest adaptations of a manga-based property into a home console game. With its character-driven mechanics and a lighthearted premise true to the original manga, it is a notable title in early Japanese gaming history and a rare collector’s item for retro gaming enthusiasts.
