Keystone Kapers

Keystone Kapers is a classic action game designed by Garry Kitchen and published by Activision.

Originally released for the Atari 2600 in 1983, the game was later ported to multiple platforms, including the ColecoVision, Atari 5200, Atari 8-bit family, and MSX. Drawing inspiration from Mack Sennett’s silent film series The Keystone Cops, the game translates slapstick comedy into a fast-paced chase adventure.

Players take on the role of Officer Keystone Kelly, a determined policeman tasked with capturing the mischievous Harry Hooligan. The pursuit unfolds inside a multi-level department store, where Kelly must run, jump, and dodge obstacles to close the gap before Hooligan makes his escape. Escalators, shopping carts, bouncing beach balls, and other hazards add to the challenge, demanding quick reflexes and precise timing.

Scoring is based on catching Hooligan before time runs out, with bonus points awarded for speed and efficiency. The game’s difficulty ramps up as levels progress, with faster action and more obstacles crowding the store.

Keystone Kapers remains a standout title in the ColecoVision library, offering simple yet addictive gameplay, charming visuals, and a direct connection to early 20th-century comedy influences. For fans of retro gaming, it is a perfect example of how classic consoles blended humor, action, and challenge into timeless arcade-style experiences.
