Joust – ColecoVision Arcade Classic by Atari, Team Pixelboy & Atarisoft

Joust is a classic arcade action game brought to the ColecoVision by Atari, Team Pixelboy, and Atarisoft. Originally an arcade hit, this home console version retains the fast-paced gameplay and competitive edge that made it a standout of the early 1980s.

In Joust, players take control of a knight mounted on a flying ostrich, tasked with surviving wave after wave of enemy gladiators riding giant vultures. The core mechanic requires players to collide with enemies from above, turning them into eggs that can be collected for extra points. If an egg is left unattended, it hatches into a stronger opponent, keeping the action intense and unpredictable.

Adding to the challenge are environmental hazards, such as deadly lava pits, as well as the appearance of the menacing Pterodactyl, which can attack without warning. Quick reflexes, sharp timing, and tactical movement are essential to lasting longer in the alien arena.

On the ColecoVision, Joust delivers a faithful adaptation of the arcade experience, combining unique gameplay with the system’s colorful graphics and smooth controls. It remains one of the most iconic multiplayer and single-player challenges in retro gaming history, celebrated for its originality, addictive gameplay, and enduring appeal among collectors and enthusiasts.
