Gyruss

Gyruss, published for the ColecoVision in 1984 by Parker Brothers, is a fast-paced shoot ’em up adapted from Konami’s 1981 arcade classic.

Known for its innovative 3D perspective and intense action, Gyruss stands as one of the most memorable space shooters of the era.

The game’s design shares similarities with Galaga, but with a key twist. Instead of moving left and right at the bottom of the screen, the player’s ship orbits around the perimeter of a circle, facing “into” the screen. Enemies appear from the center and fly outward against a scrolling starfield, creating a thrilling illusion of depth and forward momentum through space.

Set in the year A.D. 2500, Gyruss places players at the center of a galactic crisis. Humanity’s colonies, stretching from Mercury to Pluto, are under attack by the Gyrussians—an alien force led by none other than the resurrected Genghis Khan. With the Earth fleet destroyed, the player assumes the role of the lone surviving pilot, armed with advanced Neo-Bomb-Blastic Cannons and Ultra-Lazonic Phasers.

Gameplay emphasizes survival against relentless waves of enemy ships while traveling from planet to planet. Each stage cleared brings the player closer to Earth, reinforcing the sense of a desperate galactic journey. The increasing difficulty and fast-moving formations keep the action intense, rewarding precision, quick reflexes, and strategic shooting.

Gyruss for the ColecoVision captures both the arcade excitement and the technical innovation of the original. Its combination of unique perspective, challenging gameplay, and dramatic space-war storyline makes it a standout title on the console. For retro gaming fans and collectors, it remains an essential addition to the ColecoVision library and a defining example of early 1980s arcade-to-home adaptations.
