Frenzy for ColecoVision – Sequel to Berzerk with Maze Combat and Reflective Fire

Frenzy, developed by CBS Electronics and Coleco Industries, is the official sequel to the arcade hit Berzerk, brought to the ColecoVision home console.

Staying true to its predecessor’s maze-based action, Frenzy elevates the gameplay with advanced features, smarter enemies, and more complex room designs that challenge reflexes and strategy.

Players take control of a lone human protagonist navigating a series of interconnected maze-like rooms, each filled with hostile robots. These enemies fire lasers that must be dodged or countered with well-aimed shots.

A key twist in Frenzy is the introduction of reflective walls, which bounce both the player’s and enemies’ shots. This allows for ricochet tactics, where players can use wall angles to eliminate enemies or avoid direct confrontations.

To prevent players from lingering too long, each room has a time limit before a lethal character known as the "Smiley Face of Death" appears, instantly ending the player’s life upon contact. This adds urgency and intensity to every encounter.

Unique to Frenzy are four special device rooms, each containing an icon in the center. Destroying the icon not only grants bonus points but also causes a unique effect within that room, such as disabling enemy fire or altering enemy behavior—offering both risk and reward.

With its dynamic gameplay, varied room types, and strategic depth, Frenzy for ColecoVision delivers an engaging evolution of Berzerk’s formula. It remains a standout title in the early 1980s console arcade library, appealing to fans of high-stakes shooting, fast navigation, and retro sci-fi aesthetics.
