Fathom – ColecoVision Fantasy Adventure Game by Imagic

Fathom, developed by Imagic for the ColecoVision home gaming console, is a unique side-scrolling fantasy adventure that blends exploration, action, and transformation-based gameplay.

Based on a mythological theme, the game tasks players with rescuing Neptina, the daughter of Neptune, who has been imprisoned deep beneath the ocean by powerful Titans.

To free her, players must locate and collect all the scattered pieces of a magical trident. The game features dual environments—underwater and sky—and players must transform between two forms: a dolphin and a bird.

In the ocean, dolphin gameplay involves touching seahorses to reveal trident pieces while avoiding seaweed mazes, sharks, and octopuses that deplete your energy. In the sky, players control a bird flying across multiple scrolling screens, touching all clouds to reveal hidden trident fragments. Contact with other birds in the air also reduces energy.

Once all trident pieces are collected, the cage holding Neptina can be unlocked. However, if energy runs out before this is accomplished, the game ends. Fathom stands out for its creative mechanics, elegant design, and its departure from typical arcade-style action, making it a distinctive and memorable title in the ColecoVision library.
