Donkey Kong Junior

Donkey Kong Junior is a classic arcade platformer brought to the ColecoVision by Coleco Industries.

A direct sequel to the original Donkey Kong, this installment flips the storyline: now Mario is the villain, and it’s up to Donkey Kong’s son, Donkey Kong Jr., to save his captured father.

The game challenges players to retrieve a series of keys needed to unlock Donkey Kong’s cage. To do this, you must navigate a variety of vertically-scrolling jungle environments filled with obstacles and enemies. Core mechanics include climbing vines, leaping across moving platforms, and avoiding threats like Snapjaws, Mario’s ferocious minions who are determined to stop you.

Each level increases in difficulty and introduces new mechanics, requiring players to master timing, precision, and strategic movement. While the goal is simple—free Donkey Kong—the journey is packed with classic arcade intensity and cleverly designed platforming challenges.

Donkey Kong Junior stands out in the ColecoVision library not only for its tight gameplay and vibrant visuals but also for being one of the rare early games where Mario takes on an antagonistic role. It’s an essential title for fans of the Donkey Kong franchise, arcade history, and retro gaming in general. Whether you’re new to the series or reliving a childhood favorite, Donkey Kong Junior delivers fast-paced, nostalgic fun from start to finish.
