Donkey Kong – Iconic Arcade Platformer by CBS Electronics for ColecoVision

Donkey Kong is a legendary arcade platformer developed by Nintendo and brought to the ColecoVision home console by CBS Electronics and Coleco Industries.

This version offers a faithful adaptation of one of the most influential video games of all time, featuring the earliest appearances of two of Nintendo’s most iconic characters: Jumpman (later known as Mario) and Donkey Kong.

In this game, players take control of Jumpman as he attempts to rescue Lady (later known as Pauline) from the clutches of Donkey Kong, a massive ape who has taken her to the top of a perilous construction site. The gameplay is divided into four unique one-screen stages, each representing a different level of the structure, climbing from 25 meters up to 100 meters.

Each level introduces new hazards and gameplay challenges, including rolling barrels, fireballs, conveyor belts, and collapsing platforms. Players must time their jumps, climb ladders strategically, and avoid deadly obstacles to reach the top and complete each stage.

The ColecoVision version of Donkey Kong stood out at the time of release for its advanced graphics and sound, closely resembling the arcade original compared to other home console ports. It helped establish ColecoVision as a serious contender in the early home console market.

Donkey Kong remains a cornerstone of video game history and is a must-have for any ColecoVision collector or retro gaming enthusiast. Its enduring popularity and classic gameplay continue to influence platformers decades after its original release.
