Dig Dug

Dig Dug is a classic 1-2 player arcade-style game developed by Atari and published by Atarisoft for the ColecoVision home gaming console.

Known for its simple yet highly addictive gameplay, Dig Dug challenges players to dig through layers of earth while avoiding and defeating enemies in creative ways.

Armed with only a shovel and an air pump, the player must dig tunnels underground while avoiding two relentless enemies—Pooka, a red, goggle-wearing creature, and Fygar, a fire-breathing green dragon. The primary means of defense is the air pump, which allows players to inflate enemies until they burst. Timing is crucial, as failing to fully inflate an enemy lets it return to its normal state and continue the chase.

Strategic players can also use rocks scattered throughout the level to crush enemies. By digging beneath a rock and luring monsters into its path, players can eliminate multiple threats at once. However, waiting too long to act allows enemies to transform into ghost forms, making them invincible and capable of passing through earth, increasing the challenge.

Occasionally, bonus vegetables appear in the center of the screen, offering extra points when collected. The game continues until all enemies are defeated or the player loses all lives.

Dig Dug on ColecoVision preserves the charm and challenge of the original arcade hit, delivering a faithful home console experience. With its unique blend of strategy, action, and timing, it remains one of the most iconic games of the early 1980s and a must-have for fans of classic arcade gameplay.
