Defender

Defender is a legendary arcade shooter developed by Williams Electronics and adapted for the ColecoVision home console by Atarisoft.

Originally released in arcades in 1981 and designed by Eugene Jarvis, Defender became a defining title of the Golden Age of Video Arcade Games. Known for its intense action, complex controls, and high difficulty, it remains one of the most influential games in the history of the genre.

Set on a distant planet under siege, the player takes command of the spacecraft Defender, tasked with protecting scattered humanoids from waves of invading aliens—Landers, Bombers, Baiters, Pods, and Swarmers. As aliens attempt to abduct and mutate the planet’s inhabitants, the mission is simple: eliminate the threat and rescue the humanoids. Failure to save them results in their transformation into deadly mutant enemies, escalating the challenge further.

Defender features side-scrolling two-dimensional gameplay with fast-paced shooting mechanics, enhanced by smart bombs and a hyperspace ability for emergency escapes. The ColecoVision version preserves the spirit of the arcade original, offering a demanding and rewarding experience that tests reflexes, strategy, and precision.

With over 55,000 arcade units sold, Defender became Williams’ best-selling game and one of the highest-grossing arcade games of all time. Its success helped shape the future of action shooters and inspired countless imitators and sequels. The ColecoVision port brings this arcade classic to home players, maintaining its status as one of the most iconic and challenging games in video game history.
