Alphabet Zoo is an educational maze game developed by Spinnaker Software for the ColecoVision home console.
Designed to teach early reading and spelling skills, the game blends colorful visuals, interactive gameplay, and sound-based learning for children ages 3 to 7.
Presented in a top-down view, the player navigates a maze filled with scattered letters and two teleporters that warp them to random locations. At the center of each maze is a visual representation of an object—such as an apple or a cat—around which the gameplay is structured.
There are two gameplay modes:
Game 1 challenges players to collect the first letter of the object's name as many times as possible within a time limit.
Game 2 requires players to collect all the letters of the object’s name in the correct sequence.
Players can choose from three letter display settings: uppercase, lowercase, or a mix of both. The game also allows players to start at any level, making it accessible for varying skill levels. Alphabet Zoo can be played solo or with two players competing head-to-head.
Educationally, Alphabet Zoo helps children:
Strengthen letter recognition and phonemic awareness
Learn how letters correspond to specific sounds
Practice and improve basic spelling skills
Differentiate between vowels, consonants, or the entire alphabet, depending on the selected difficulty
Developed by teacher and educational game designer Dale Disharoon, Alphabet Zoo was created with both entertainment and structured learning in mind. With engaging sound effects, bright graphics, and age-appropriate challenges, it offers a balanced and enjoyable introduction to literacy through interactive play.
