421 is a digital adaptation of the traditional French dice game, brought to the ColecoVision console by developer Mathieu Proulx.
Designed with a focus on competitive strategy and fast-paced gameplay, 421 captures the spirit of classic tabletop gaming in a retro video game format.
The game centers around rolling three dice to create the highest-ranking hand. The round begins with the first player rolling and setting a hand. That player may choose to roll again to improve their result, but if they stop after one roll, all subsequent players are limited to a single attempt. This rule adds a layer of tactical depth, as early players must weigh risk and reward before locking in their hand.
Hands are ranked in a strict hierarchy:
4-2-1 is the highest combination and scores double points if achieved on the first roll.
Three of a kind, from 6-6-6 down to 1-1-1.
Two of a kind plus a backer, such as 6-6-5 or 1-1-2.
No matches, ranked from 4-5-6 (highest) to 1-2-3 (lowest).
At the end of each round, the player with the best hand earns a point. The game is typically played over 10 rounds, and the player with the highest score at the end is declared the winner.
421 on ColecoVision is a faithful and engaging interpretation of a time-honored game of chance and skill. Whether played solo or with friends, it offers a quick-thinking, high-stakes experience that blends traditional dice mechanics with the charm of vintage console gaming.
