Astro Command

Astro Command, released for the Epoch Cassette Vision, is a side-scrolling shooter heavily inspired by Konami’s Super Cobra arcade game.

As a clone with its own unique features, Astro Command brings a fresh twist to the genre while preserving the high-intensity gameplay that defined early 1980s shooters.

While maintaining the core concept of navigating a hostile environment in a combat aircraft, Astro Command introduces several changes that distinguish it from its arcade counterpart. Notably, players must contend with asteroid-like objects that drift unpredictably through the air, adding a new layer of challenge. These airborne hazards replace many of the standard enemy ships, creating a different rhythm and pacing to the action.

The game is designed for the Cassette Vision, Japan’s early home console by Epoch, and showcases what the system could deliver in terms of fast-paced arcade-style gameplay. With limited graphics and sound capabilities, the game focuses on timing, reflexes, and pattern recognition, making it a true test of skill for retro gaming enthusiasts.

Astro Command stands as a unique example of how early Japanese developers adapted popular arcade hits for home consoles, offering familiar gameplay with inventive twists that reflected the limitations and creativity of the hardware.
