The Dreadnaught Factor

The Dreadnaught Factor for the Atari 5200 is a vertical scrolling shooter developed by Cheshire Engineering and designed by Tom Loughry.

Adapted from the original Intellivision version, this release shifts the action from horizontal to vertical scrolling due to hardware differences, but the core concept remains the same: the player must prevent an approaching fleet of massive capital ships, known as Zorban Dreadnaughts, from annihilating the planet Terra.

Players control the Novaray Hyperfighter, a small but agile spacecraft built for high-risk assault runs against the enormous Dreadnaughts. Each Dreadnaught is significantly larger than the screen, requiring multiple passes to engage its defenses and expose weaknesses. The objective is to destroy all energy vents scattered across the hull of each ship. These vents must be bombed directly, making positioning and timing critical.

The Hyperfighter is equipped with two primary weapons: a laser that can take out gun turrets, missile silos, and other onboard threats; and bombs that target the energy vents and the ship’s engines. Destroying the four rear engines of a Dreadnaught slows its advance toward Terra, buying valuable time for additional attack runs. This mechanic introduces a strategic layer where players can choose to disable engines early to extend the mission window.

Each Dreadnaught presents a unique configuration of defenses, requiring players to learn enemy patterns, time their approaches, and balance offense with survival. As the game progresses through its difficulty settings, the challenge intensifies. Many players consider the final difficulty level—often referred to by the nickname "YGTBK" (You've Got To Be Kidding!)—one of the most demanding stages on the Atari 5200.

The Dreadnaught Factor stands out for its focus on dismantling single, massive targets rather than waves of smaller enemies. This structure gives it a distinctive identity within the 5200 library and highlights the technical creativity required to portray capital-ship-scale battles on early hardware. The combination of strategic bombing, precise flight control, and escalating threat levels makes it a notable entry in the system’s catalog of shooters.
