Putt 18 Mini Golf

Putt 18 Mini Golf is a homebrew sports title developed by Peter Meyer (also known as peteym5) for the Atari 5200 home gaming console, with compatibility across the Atari 8-bit computer family.

Released in late 2017 to early 2018, the game was published by Video 61 & Atari Sales and represents a modern addition to the Atari 5200 software library.

The game was created to address a notable omission in the Atari 5200’s original lineup. During the console’s commercial lifespan, no official golf title reached retail release. Although a prototype called Miniature Golf was developed in 1983 by Steve Baker, it was never commercially published. Putt 18 Mini Golf effectively fills this long-standing gap by delivering a complete miniature golf experience tailored to the hardware.

Putt 18 Mini Golf includes 18 individual holes, each designed within the technical constraints and strengths of the Atari 5200. The game makes use of a 40x24 character display and employs the Antic 4 high-resolution graphics mode to present the courses clearly on screen. Course layouts are structured to provide visual variety while remaining readable on original hardware.

Control is designed around the Atari 5200’s unique analog joystick and keypad, ensuring that the game feels native to the system rather than adapted from another platform. This focus on hardware-specific input reflects a deliberate effort to produce a title that integrates naturally with the console’s design.

As a homebrew release, Putt 18 Mini Golf stands as an example of continued development for classic Atari systems decades after their commercial decline. It is primarily of interest to Atari 5200 collectors, retro gaming enthusiasts, and players seeking to explore new software created specifically for vintage hardware.
