Pacific Coast HWY

Pacific Coast HWY for the Atari 5200 is a homebrew conversion of the 1982 arcade-style game originally developed and published by Datasoft for the Atari 8-bit computer family.

Although the Atari 5200 shared much of its hardware architecture with Atari’s 8-bit computers, Pacific Coast HWY was never officially released for the console during its commercial lifespan. Its later appearance on the Atari 5200 is the result of a user-created ROM hack that adapted the original computer cartridge to function on the system.

The game is a clear variant of Frogger, retaining the core objective while introducing several notable differences. Players guide an animal character, described in various sources as either a tortoise or a rabbit, across a busy highway filled with moving cars and then across a river by jumping between passing boats. Unlike the arcade original, the road and river sections are presented on separate screens. Despite this separation, both sections together make up a single level, and progression only occurs once both challenges have been successfully completed.

As the game advances, the difficulty increases in meaningful ways. From the second level onward, the sidewalk located in the middle of the screen begins to move, adding an extra layer of timing and precision to the gameplay. This change forces players to adapt their movement strategies and raises the challenge beyond that of the earliest stages. Pacific Coast HWY supports both single-player and simultaneous two-player modes, enhancing its replay value and competitive appeal.

The Atari 5200 version is attributed to Ken Williams for the console conversion, building upon the original 1982 Datasoft release. While unofficial, the port highlights the flexibility of the Atari 5200 hardware and the dedication of the retro gaming community in preserving and expanding the console’s library. Today, Pacific Coast HWY is regarded as an interesting example of an unreleased Atari 5200 title that blends familiar arcade mechanics with unique design variations, making it a noteworthy entry for collectors and enthusiasts of homebrew and converted games.
