Necromancer

Necromancer is a homebrew release for the Atari 5200 home gaming console, converted from the original Atari 8-bit computer version first published in 1982 by Synapse Software.

The original game was designed by Bill Williams, a highly influential figure in early video game development. The Atari 5200 version was created by Steve Tucker, known within the Atari community as “classics,” and was released on March 2, 2011 through the AtariAge homebrew scene.

The game blends action and strategy elements and is structured as a three-act experience, often described by its creator as a “three-act play.” Rather than relying solely on reflex-based gameplay, Necromancer emphasizes planning, resource management, and tactical decision-making.

The first act, The Forest, tasks the player with growing and managing an army of enchanted trees. These trees serve both as defensive units and offensive tools, protecting the wizard from hostile creatures such as ogres and spiders while expanding the player’s influence across the landscape.

In the second act, The Vaults, the focus shifts to a multi-level crypt filled with spider eggs. The player uses the trees cultivated in the forest to destroy these eggs, requiring careful positioning and timing to progress through the increasingly dangerous vaults.

The final act, The Graveyard, culminates in a confrontation with the powerful necromancer Tetragorn. This stage represents the ultimate test of the player’s strategic preparation and mastery of the game’s mechanics.

The Atari 5200 homebrew conversion preserves the core design and atmosphere of the original Atari 8-bit release while adapting it to the console’s hardware. Today, Necromancer for the Atari 5200 is regarded as a standout example of high-quality homebrew development, valued by retro game collectors for both its deep gameplay and its faithful preservation of a classic early-1980s title.
