Mr. Cool

Mr. Cool is a homebrew title for the Atari 5200 home gaming console, developed by Sierra On-Line and based on their earlier Atari 8-bit computer release from 1983.

Although fully playable on the Atari 5200, the game was never officially released as a retail cartridge for the system, making it a notable curiosity among retro game collectors and Atari enthusiasts.

The gameplay is directly inspired by the arcade hit Q*bert. Players control a cube-shaped character navigating a pyramid constructed of color-changing platforms. The primary objective is to jump across every platform and change them all to a uniform target color. Precision movement and timing are essential, as falling off the pyramid or colliding with enemies results in the loss of a life.

Adding to the challenge are flying comets that move unpredictably across the screen, posing a constant threat to the player’s progress. However, these comets can temporarily transform into balls, at which point they become collectible items that can be safely gathered for additional points. This mechanic introduces a risk-versus-reward element that rewards attentive and strategic play.

As a conversion from the Atari 8-bit computer version, Mr. Cool demonstrates Sierra On-Line’s early experimentation with arcade-style gameplay on home systems. While it never received an official Atari 5200 cartridge release, its existence highlights the overlap between Atari’s computer and console platforms during the early 1980s. Today, Mr. Cool is appreciated as a rare and historically interesting entry in the Atari 5200 library, particularly among collectors focused on unreleased and homebrew titles.
