Missile Command

Missile Command is a classic arcade-style video game developed by Atari and released for the Atari 5200 home gaming console.

It is one of Atari’s most recognisable and influential titles, translating the intensity and strategy of the original arcade experience to home console play.

In Missile Command, players are tasked with defending cities from incoming enemy missiles by controlling a crosshair across a scrolling sky background. Using the crosshair, players launch counter-missiles from one of three missile batteries positioned along the ground. When a counter-missile reaches its target point, it explodes into a fireball that remains on screen for several seconds, destroying any enemy missiles that pass through the blast radius.

Each of the three missile batteries is equipped with a limited supply of ten missiles. Once a battery has fired all of its missiles, it becomes inactive for the remainder of the level. Batteries can also be permanently disabled if they are struck and destroyed by enemy fire, adding a layer of tactical decision-making to the gameplay. Players must carefully manage their missile resources while prioritising which threats to eliminate.

The central missile battery plays a critical strategic role, as its missiles travel significantly faster than those launched from the left and right batteries. These faster missiles are the only effective means of destroying smart bombs at long range, making the protection of the central battery essential for survival in later stages of the game.

Missile Command on the Atari 5200 delivers fast-paced action combined with strategic resource management, remaining faithful to the arcade original while leveraging the console’s hardware. Its tense gameplay, distinctive defensive mechanics, and escalating difficulty have cemented it as a cornerstone of Atari’s home console library and a must-own title for retro game collectors and classic gaming enthusiasts.
