Miner 2049er – Classic Platform Game for Atari 5200

Miner 2049er is a platform video game created by Bill Hogue and released in 1982 by Big Five Software.

Originally developed for the Atari 8-bit family, the game was later ported to multiple systems, including the Atari 5200 home gaming console. It became well known for its precise platforming mechanics and distinctive level design.

Players take on the role of Bounty Bob, a prospector tasked with inspecting mines in pursuit of the villain Yukon Yohan. Each level is composed of multiple platforms and corridors that must be fully explored. As Bounty Bob walks across sections of flooring, they fill with color, visually indicating progress through the level.

To complete a stage, every section of flooring must be colored before time expires. The game features a strict time limit represented by Bounty Bob’s oxygen supply, requiring players to move efficiently and plan their routes carefully. Running out of oxygen results in failure of the level.

Throughout the mines, players must avoid a variety of radioactive creatures that serve as obstacles and hazards. These enemies patrol the platforms and passages, forcing precise jumps and well-timed movements to survive.

Miner 2049er combines exploration, timing, and platforming skill into a challenging experience. Its unique mechanic of coloring platforms, along with its demanding level structure, helped establish it as a notable and influential title on the Atari 5200 and other classic gaming platforms.
