Millipede – Prototype Arcade Conversion for Atari 5200

Millipede is a homebrew release for the Atari 5200 home gaming console, based on an unfinished prototype conversion of the popular arcade game originally developed by Atari.

The conversion was completed in 1984 but was never officially released, as Atari discontinued support for the 5200 console shortly before the game’s planned launch.

Decades later, the prototype was preserved and eventually released as a homebrew title in 2017 by AtariAge, making the long-lost Atari 5200 version available to collectors and retro gaming enthusiasts.

The gameplay centers on surviving successive waves of hostile insects while attempting to destroy a millipede that steadily moves down the screen toward the player. The objective is to eliminate the millipede and other enemies before they overwhelm the playfield.

While closely related to Centipede, Millipede introduces several new gameplay elements and challenges. Players must contend with a wider variety of insect enemies, each adding unique hazards to the battlefield. In addition, DDT bombs appear on the screen, and when shot, they explode to destroy nearby enemies and obstacles, adding a tactical element to combat.

Millipede for the Atari 5200 stands as an important example of unreleased console history brought back to life through the homebrew community. It offers a more complex evolution of the Centipede formula and provides insight into Atari’s late-era development for the 5200 platform.
