Meteorites for the Atari 5200 is a vertical scrolling shooter developed by Cheshire Engineering and designed by Tom Loughry.

Meteorites is an arcade action game developed by Electra Concepts International for the Atari 5200 home gaming console. Drawing clear inspiration from the classic Asteroids formula, the game focuses on fast-paced space combat and progressively challenging asteroid-filled environments.

In Meteorites, players control a spaceship positioned within a field of drifting asteroids. The primary objective is to eliminate all asteroids on the screen. Each asteroid breaks into smaller fragments when shot, requiring repeated precision attacks until the fragments are reduced to a size that can be fully destroyed. Once all asteroids are cleared, the game advances to the next level, which increases in difficulty.

To further challenge the player, enemy flying saucers periodically appear and attempt to destroy the player’s ship. These encounters add an additional layer of danger, forcing players to manage threats from both static obstacles and active enemies.

The spaceship is also equipped with a hyperspace function, allowing the player to instantly teleport to a different location on the screen. While hyperspace can be used as an emergency escape mechanism, it carries a risk, as the ship may reappear in an even more hazardous position.

Meteorites offers a faithful interpretation of classic arcade space shooters, combining escalating difficulty, strategic movement, and risk-reward mechanics. Its design makes it a notable title for Atari 5200 owners seeking a traditional arcade-style experience on home hardware.
