Livewire

Livewire is a vector-style shooter developed by A.N.A.L.O.G. Computing and Tom Hudson for the Atari 5200 home gaming console.

The game places the player along the outer edge of a geometric playfield, often described as a web, where movement is restricted to the perimeter while enemies advance inward toward the player’s position. The objective is to eliminate these enemies before they reach the edge, requiring precise control and constant situational awareness.

The design of Livewire is heavily inspired by the arcade game Tempest, and it represents one of the earliest successful efforts to recreate that arcade experience on Atari home hardware. Rather than attempting a direct port, Livewire adapts the core mechanics of circular movement and inward-firing combat to suit the technical capabilities of the platform while maintaining the distinctive vector-style presentation.

The Atari 5200 version of Livewire is particularly valued by enthusiasts due to the console’s analog joystick controllers. These controllers allow for smooth, continuous movement around the geometric webs, closely approximating the rotary spinner control used in the original Tempest arcade cabinet. This control method provides a level of precision and fluidity that was difficult to achieve on systems limited to digital joysticks.

Because the Atari 5200 shares nearly identical internal architecture with the Atari 400 and 800 computer systems, the game’s original code, which was published in magazine form, could be adapted efficiently for the console. This technical compatibility helped preserve the game’s performance and responsiveness, contributing to its strong reputation among retro gaming fans. Livewire remains an important example of early vector-style shooters on home consoles and a standout title in the Atari 5200 library.
