Kaboom!

Kaboom! is a classic arcade-style action game developed by Larry Kaplan and published by Activision for the Atari 5200 home gaming console.

The game is an unauthorized adaptation of Atari’s 1978 arcade title Avalanche, reimagined with a new theme and faster-paced gameplay that helped establish Kaboom! as one of Activision’s most successful releases.

In Kaboom!, players face off against the Mad Bomber, a character who moves back and forth across the top of the screen while dropping bombs toward the ground. The objective is to prevent these bombs from hitting the bottom of the screen by catching them in buckets controlled by the player. The game relies heavily on precise timing and quick reflexes, as missed bombs result in lost lives.

The Atari 5200 version uses paddle-style controls, allowing smooth and responsive horizontal movement of the buckets. This control scheme is central to the game’s design, as bomb speeds increase rapidly and require fine adjustments rather than broad movements. As the game progresses, the Mad Bomber’s movement becomes more erratic, and bombs fall at increasingly faster rates.

Kaboom! features multiple difficulty levels, with each stage escalating in speed and intensity. The seven higher levels significantly raise the challenge, testing players’ reaction time and hand-eye coordination. The increasing pace ensures that even experienced players must maintain constant focus to succeed.

The game was both a critical and commercial success, becoming one of Activision’s best-selling titles. By 1983, Kaboom! had sold over one million cartridges, a remarkable achievement for the era. Its combination of simple mechanics, escalating difficulty, and precise controls has secured Kaboom!’s reputation as a defining arcade action game on the Atari 5200 and other platforms of its time.
