Atari’s classic arcade action game featuring flying knights, enemy vultures, hatching eggs, and challenging platform-based combat.
Joust is a classic arcade-style action game developed and published by Atari for the Atari 5200 home gaming console.
The game is a home adaptation of the popular arcade title and retains its distinctive blend of aerial combat and platform-based gameplay.
In Joust, players control a knight armed with a lance who rides a flying ostrich. In two-player mode, the second player rides a stork. The objective is to defeat waves of computer-controlled enemy knights, each mounted on a vulture. Combat is based on elevation rather than direct attacks, requiring players to flap their mount’s wings to gain height and strike enemies from a higher jousting position.
When an enemy knight is defeated, it leaves behind an egg that drops onto one of the platforms below. These eggs must be destroyed quickly, as they will eventually hatch and release new enemy knights. If left unattended for too long, the enemies become progressively stronger, increasing the difficulty and intensity of the gameplay.
The game features three primary types of enemy knights, each with unique behavior patterns. Bounders, represented by red knights, move unpredictably and bounce around the platforms. Hunters, shown as white knights, actively pursue the player. Shadow Lords, the blue knights, represent the most dangerous standard enemies, aggressively targeting players with increased speed and precision.
Beyond enemy knights, Joust presents additional environmental hazards that challenge players’ awareness and timing. Platforms may crumble and disappear, reducing safe landing areas. Lava trolls emerge from the fire pits, attempting to drag knights to their defeat. As matches extend for too long, players may also encounter the pterodactyl, a highly aggressive enemy often regarded as nearly impossible to defeat.
Joust on the Atari 5200 delivers a faithful home console experience that emphasizes skill, timing, and spatial control, securing its place as one of the most memorable and enduring titles in the system’s library.
